It's no secret . . . I LOVE SWEETS! Seasonal candy is my nemesis for sure. Candy corn . . . candy canes . . . conversation hearts . . . jelly beans . . . . you can bet that I get my fill of these delicious treats during the holiday seasons. I can never seem to get enough done in my art studio (aka the dining room table) tho which also a sweet craving that I have . . . often. I created some unique, fun Christmas ornaments this year to send to friends and family. I also have been creating these conversation hearts for Valentine's Day. I love these little candies and have to read each one as I nibble on them. So I've enjoyed finding unusual words to put on these . . . more to come!

Wow. Has it been since last March since I last posted? Time certainly does pass quickly. I have been in the midst of a creative burst as I prepare for the RECYCLE SANTA FE art show in November. I am quite excited as I have been going to the event for the past four years and marvel at the creativity of those who share their artwork at the show. I am sharing a booth with my new found friend, Darlene. I will post some more about her soon. She makes the most unique jewelry that I'm sure you'll love!
I thought I'd share a little bit about the process I use in creating my "wall peaces" which have been really fun to make. I enjoy the thought of finding something that has been discarded or has been left over from another project and then keeping it for future creative projects. I have a very large collection . . . and it keeps growing! I started with some leftover muslin from a when I was making patterns for a costume. I've used this fabric for many many projects . . . I bought way too much!! It has proven to be a great base for my little "peaces." I also have an affinity for magazines . . . cooking, gardening, art, etc . . . you name it . . . I like to read it! Rather than toss them, I use many of them in my art. You'll soon find how I use them in my next post . . . hopefully not in six months!!
The process of creating these "wall peaces" is like finding peace in my life . . . takes a little bit of patience . . . experimentation . . . and listening to my instincts. Namaste.

Where is the pEAcE?

Boy oh boy. I have been sitting here today thinking about all the things in the news these days. We haven't had cable television for over a year now and to be honest . . . we don't miss it. I do however spend more time online reading news stories and more than my fair share of time chatting and/or debating with folks on Facebook or email. It seems we are battling such extreme points of view and the middle ground is fading away. Kind words and deeds have been replaced with jabs and words of hate. I am trying to step back and take it all in but find it to be toxic at times. I enjoy a good debate, learning about other points of view and even agreeing to disagree . . . but I'm growing tired of certain issues and need to release it to a higher power. That's why escaping to my art or my music is of such comfort to my soul. I can focus on the beautiful materials I have to work with and create something unique and special from them. I am an avid "collector" of odds and ends that I hope one day will become part of a work of art. I enjoy the process of going through a box of treasures to find just the right things to use. Endless pleasure! So I am making a promise to myself to spend more time going through my treasures and creating art than scouring through mind-numbing stories dished up by the media. I can't go cold turkey because I like to stay in-the-know but I can promise to lessen my time online and letting certain things go and run their course. It is true what so many say . . . ART SAVES LIVES.

This post is in memory of my wonderful grandma Irma. She spent 94 years of life on this earth and had a profound influence on my life and and countless others. I have so many fond memories to share like her homemade strawberry jam, Halloween sugar cookies, popcorn balls, melt in your mouth Thanksgiving day stuffing, pecan pie, picking raspberries . . . . you know I am a big food lover and I share her 'sweet tooth!' She was also the kindest person to everyone she met. She had faith in and a love of people that is almost unheard of today. I strive to be a believer of faith in others like she is but I have faltered at times. I did inherit her joy of teaching and am proud to have followed in her footsteps. She was always steadfast in her love and total dedication to her family. Upon our high school graduation all of her beloved grandchildren received a handmade quilt. Mine is a double wedding ring pattern with "peaces" of fabric from many of my cousins and siblings baby clothes and play clothes. It is so beautiful not only because of the bright and colorful fabrics but the love and care that was put into this hand stitched quilt. There is even a blood stain on it which she was hesitant to show me . . . but every time I take it out to look at it I search for it as well as for her signature that she has sewn into the border.
A few days ago I was up in the Sangre de Christo mountains above Santa Fe taking in the scenery and breathing in the crisp fall air. As I looked at the changing colors of the leaves I was reminded of my quilt. The brilliant tapestry of colorful aspen leaves against the pine trees resemble my beautiful quilt. I know she would love this beautiful place where I live. I felt close to my grandmother tho I am hundreds of miles away.
I love you grandma may you rest in peace. Thank you for your love and for your tireless encouragement.

I have been wanting to approach the owners of Santa Fe Hemp about selling my art for a long while. We have been patrons of the store dozens of times over the years and I can never seem to leave without purchasing something for myself or as a gift. It is a truly unique little store with something for everyone. Recently I did email the owners and they agreed to sell my "Wall PeAcEs" in their shop! September 21st is International Day of Peace. What are you doing for yourself or for others? Create a "peace" of art? Talk to a co-worker who is difficult? Smile at a stranger? Pay for the coffee of the person behind you? I'd love to hear what you plan to do or spontaneously do in your home, workplace or your community. Remember . . . . peace begins with me.
I am making peace flags with a group of 3rd/4th graders to display in our school hallway as a reminder of Peace Day. We are also learning about using our school labyrinth and how it can make us feel more at peace with ourselves so we can tackle the tasks set before us. We've had one introductory lesson and boy did it work miracles. You could have heard a pin drop as we processed through the labyrinth with an intention set before us in our mind and in our heart. I am planning to use it a lot in the weeks to come. It was a great first experience!
I look forward to reading your comments and hearing how you marked Peace Day.

I am enjoying my summer vacation with abandon. Finding time during the busy school year is often challenging to create things that feed my artistic sweet tooth. Summer is a time for me to try some new things that have been occupying my thoughts or the scribbles I keep in a notebook that I carry with me. I find it hard to throw things out that I could potential use for my art or as storage for things. These PeAcE pieces are created with scraps of canvas, fabric, cut out letters from magazines, buttons from my junk drawer, leftover bits of paint and twigs that I pick up during our walks along Canyon Road and hikes in the mountains surrounding Santa Fe. I have a few more embellishments to do, photograph each one individually and then list them in my ETSY shop. I hope you are finding time this summer to feed your artistic sweet tooth.

Reduce . . . Reuse . . . UP-CYCLE!

I love vintage and antique furniture. I have a house full of great finds to prove it! We bought this chair at an estate sale a few years ago because it had great bones and was a classic design. The fabric was worn, dingy and quite dirty. I was able to give it new life by recovering it in a great Santa Fe style fabric that I found at a second hand store. I even made a coordinating pillow from some denim jean fabric scraps and leftover pieces of the fabric I used to cover the chair. I'm pleased with the results over all. What I'm really pleased with is that this old chair has been given new life. So often we cast things off because they are worn or seen as past their prime. This chair transformation was fun and a way to marry some second hand fabric and a discarded chair for a new purpose in my home.

Have you smiled at a random stranger lately? Opened a door for someone? Offered assistance to someone in need? I have a marvelous group of youngsters in my summer school program. We've been practicing random acts of peace and discussing them each day. Even their parents are coming in to share stories when the drop their children off each morning. I hope they can carry this forward after our last week of camp next week. It has been a pleasure and great fun working with them the past three weeks and shall miss them after our performance next week.

I have been busy with school performances this month . . . only four more to go!! I love my job. This past winter the children of Santa Fe almost lost their art and music programs in the public schools. Lots of support from the community came forth to make a plea to keep the arts alive and their voices were heard. Have you ever wanted to make a plea for a worthy cause and then didn't make or find the time to do so? It felt good for me to make my voice heard for my music students. Not so much for the sake of keeping my job, but for my students who I love and have so much I want to share with them to open their minds and hearts to music.

After all this stress it is great to have my art to come home to and feed my soul. It gives me true peace of mind to have this outlet to express myself and clear out the cobwebs in my mind.

Since we moved to beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico we have so enjoyed the four seasons that mother nature provides. Each one has it's own beauty and feeling. All seasons in northern New Mexico are glorious and beautiful. This winter in particular has been lovely with abundant snowfall and excellent photo opportunities! I am however anxious for the flowers of spring to arrive. I have been lusting over seed catalogs!!
These magnets are newly listed in my ETSY shop. I am pleased with their cheery color and hope they will brighten somebody's kitchen very soon! In the meantime I will continue to enjoy the charms of winter here in Santa Fe.

I have been having such fun experimenting with wool whether it is lambs wool or an old wool sweater. I've been making scarves and pot holders. Now being a environmentally conscious kind of guy I had to use as much of the the wool as possible! Therefore I have created two heart wall hangings that are for sale in my ETSY shop.
I am having such fun finding new things to create and have made such marvelous connections through ETSY, Facebook and the blogging world . . . . wonderful creative souls and special people. I have enjoyed this cyber relationship and hope one day to meet many of my cyber friends. They are true friends nonetheless and I cherish their spirit, creative input and inspiration.

Wooly Booly!

I have fallen into the world of felting sweaters . . . and I can't stop!! I am finding it fascinating and fun! It is such fun to stick a perfectly good merino wool sweater into the washer with soap and hot water then toss it into a hot dryer!! An old baggy wool sweater that has seen it's better days is now toddler size!! Here are a few beginning projects I've made for family and friends. I got the needle felting bug too . . . been buying wool at Oodles here in Santa Fe.

Peace in the year ahead

I have been away from the world of blogging for a bit. I've changed the name of my blog and am going to be sharing some new things. Not sure if I'll keep up and post daily but I am hoping to share some of my new addictions (aka sweet tooth) to several art mediums new to me and my experience in the later part of 2009. I am still keeping my hands a bit muddy with clay projects but now I find myself washing paint brushes and picking up bits of fabric and thread off the floor. I've discovered that painting can be fun, messy, frustrating, challenging and quite satisfying. I've been messing about with painting on fabric and adding other mixed media. I have found mixed media collage to be fascinating and beautiful. I've been collecting a increasingly growing stack of books on this medium. See my Shelfari selections for some of the most recent books I've been reading and loving.
The two little pieces I've pictured here are my experiments with mixed media. They measure only 2 X 2 1/2" (not including the hangers). I began with a scrap of canvas and after some paint, magazine ephemera, rusty wire and beads . . . here's what I ended up with. Some tiny peace canvases.
I hope all of you can find time to satisfy your artistic sweet tooth. I am so fortunate to have a supportive partner who encourages me to have a go at whatever might artistic eye candy I might be drooling over. I hope this New Year brings peace and great art experiences and experimentation into your life.

peace and unique found treasures

I am the finder of lost pennies, rusty bottle caps, unique sticks, rocks and other assorted treasures. As a child I was always looking down at the ground to find these cast off treasures. My mom said that someday I'd run into a pole . . . I did once on a family vacation!

I am enjoying the process of using these fun, funky things in my art, along with my ever growing fabric collection! However, that is another story and another blog post.

Above is a little piece I created out of a twig that I found on a hike in the Sangre de Christo mountains a few miles from our home here in Santa Fe. It is a glorious peace-filled place that we love to frequent as often as we can.

The beads are salvaged from another piece of art that met its demise due to our strong spring winds and the peace sign was handcrafted by myself from terra cotta clay.

Finding Peace

I have an affinity for images of the Buddha. I find them enchanting . . . calming . . . serene . . . and beautiful. I have found that surrounding yourself with beautiful things that inspire you and help you relax is important. Trust me . . . if you came to my home, you'd see I have a lot of wonderful inspiration all around me.

I have created several tiles with Buddha images on them. Some are my own creation and some are photographs. These three tiles are a few of many images that I particularly love. Each with their own uniqueness and beauty. The tiles are handmade by myself. The images are done with a phototransfer process that I am starting to explore. All three tiles are for sale (of course) in my ETSY shop.

New Project - whatchamacallit!

Happy July!

I've been working on using materials I have around my house to create art. I'm so tempted to buy new things to work on but realize I need to repurpose things I already have. I like how this piece turned out and want to list it in my ETSY shop. I'm not sure what to call it!

It is made from three terra cotta clay peace signs that I designed and made. The rest are some glass and ceramic beads, wire and a twig. I'm thinking it would look great on your front door, gate or even hanging in a tree. You could also use this indoors.

Happy Mother's Day!! I hope all of you moms and moms-t0-be are having a wonderful day filled with hugs, pampering, relaxation and peace.

The photo above is something new I am working on . . . in my attempts to de-clutter my home . . . I am now using up pieces of fabric from my many years of making costumes for plays, puppets, pillows and a myriad of other projects. This one is made of a great yellow fabric and another wild and crazy piece of fabric. I added a twig from that I found on a hike along with my favorite craft staple . . . rusty wire!!

I have needed to clean up my workspace (the kitchen table) for a while now. Some spring cleaning perhaps? After going through my odd and ends I liked the way these two pieces worked together their contrast. So I set off to make them work together. The gift of friendship

As you know from following this blog, I am a potter of sorts. Shortly after joining a team of potters on ETSY, I met Teri. We share a similar style of hand building our pieces and a love of texture and color! We've become great friends exchanging tips, suggestions, life stories and most recently we exchanged our work!! She sent me an email wanting me to create four custom tiles to hang in her studio. I was thrilled to do so. In exchange she made me two fabulous tea bowls which I adore and a wonderful coaster with the word "peace" stamped into it. I am overjoyed and absolutely in love with these pieces of art. (See the pic above)

I have been most fortunate to have met Teri through ETSY and the ETSY Mud Team. She is a gem and a kindred spirit. I hope one day we actually will get to meet face to face. Watch out!! :)

It is always such a gift to exchange things with loved ones. Exchanging gifts, cards, hugs, peace, and in this case . . . my addiction . . . . POTTERY!!

Two Bear Tumblers

I'm liking the results and might make more things with this image. I love the Native American symbols. The bear stands for courage, strength, protection and life.

Buddha Peace Tile

I made this tile about a year ago. I had photographed it for my pottery notebook of work I've made and then stuck the tile a drawer. A music teacher friend of mine found it posted in my Flickr photos and asked if it was available. I had completely forgot about it. Now that I look at it I like it but am going to make a few changes.

It is made of terra cotta clay and hand carved. I have been experimenting with old rusty wire that we found on our property and glass bead. I love mixed media art!

I've been BLOGGED!

A fellow potter and friend from Bend, Oregon blogged about her excitement surrounding the inauguration of Barack Obama. It was great to read her enthusiastic words and also see my Peace Tile in her blog!! How fun!!

I also was quite excited and emotional about todays celebration. What a wonderful day! My students were quite interested and energetic about the day also. We were fortunate to have a wonderful parent who set up two big screen televisions and a sound system in our cafeteria for everyone to get a great view and to hear the wonderful music. Very inspiring. :)

Have you ever seen a million of anything? Maybe perhaps grains of sand or sugar granules. Pretty amazing concept to comprehend. Sure would like to see that number in my bank account! I have been a huge fan of Deepak Chopra for years. After hearing finding out about his appearance on a celebrity talk show, I checked it out. He spoke of taking a vow of non-violence in thoughts, speech and actions. So I went to his website to do so.

The above pic is of our most recent snowfall here in Santa Fe and was taken by my partner. There is nothing quite like waking up to a fresh blanket of snow. The world is silent and peaceful. I hope you have found some time for peace this weekend and throughout the coming week.

Peace-filled Forest

You know that saying . . . . "you can't see the forest for the trees?" I don't think whoever coined that phrase was in this particular forest. When I came upon this picture, it made me long for a hike in our beautiful national forest here in Santa Fe. It is so quiet and peaceful up there. It might be time to dust off my snowshoes!!

During this week if you are feeling lost in the forest of life. Stop. Imagine some place that brings peace and joy to you. I like to think of being at home and watching birds out my windows with a nice cup of hot coffee. We have a large variety of birds that come to feed in our courtyard. Which reminds me . . . . I need more bird seed!

Winter Solstice

Tonight at the Santa Fe's Children's Museum there was a Winter Solstice celebration. It was a tad bit chilly so we didn't stay as long as we'd like to. There was drumming circle, cider, posole, cookies, story-telling, smores, bonfires and a farolito labyrinth. The sunset was amazing! Despite the chill in the air, it was so peaceful and a time of personal reflection while walking through the labyrinth.

These are small clay pendants/charms that were strung on jewelry wire with glass beads to catch the sunlight. I think these will look great in a sunny window in your home or office! I've even made some to hang from rear view mirrors. We all need reminders to be peace-filled especially in busy traffic!

I've been wanting to give this technique a try. I used a photo/image transfer decal on this plate. The iron oxide in the ink burns into the glaze. Can't wait to try out some more!

This photo was taken about 30 minutes northwest of Santa Fe. The little church in the foreground is on the San Ildefonso Pueblo with Battleship Rock in the background. If you look closely you can see snow in the Sangre de Christo mountains. We spent this weekend on two art tours. Saturday in the lovely town of Galisteo and today in quaint El Rito. New Mexico is in its glory this time of year. I love everything about it! I hope your weekend has been relaxing and that your week ahead is rewarding and full of peace.

I have an amazing view of the Sangre de Christo mountains from my classroom windows. If I step outside my door . . . this is what I get to look at everyday. Lucky me! The aspens are at the peak right now and on Saturday evening the ground received a blanket of snow. Time for mittens and scarves to come from the back of the closet. I love it!!

I've been in an organizing mood lately. I seem to go in spurts when I dig in and organize and purge things that are cluttering up my home. Usually when a drawer or door won't close on some piece of furniture or closet is an indication that I need to tackle this. Some times our minds get this way also. Take time and remember to breathe. Talk things out. Call on a friend.

I've been teaching this little song and my students love the words. I had a parent stop by my classroom today to tell me that her daughter taught this little song to her Sunday school class. Here is an example of a young girl spreading peace to others. It was a proud moment for me. Here are the words:

Today I came across a wonderful song called "Beads on One String" by Dennis Warner. Not only is it a great song, it is a wonderfully illustrated book. Turtle Charm 4 Peace

Today we spent a glorious day driving the high road to Taos for the High Road Studio Tour. Not only was the scenery spectacular, so was the art!! I could have done serious damage to our bank account! I have had my eye on these cute little turtle charms from Turtle Rock Studios in Truchas, New Mexico for a long time. Today I purchased this little guy from ceramic artist Samantha Decker-Hoppen. Life and Abundance

I love the symbols found in Native American art. I enjoy reading about the symbols and their meanings. Even more so hearing the artists speak about the symbols they choose to put into their works of art. I used the life spiral and corn symbol on this tile. Both of these represent life and abundance. Corn is a mainstay in many Native American tribes. This is one out of a set of four that art for sale in my ETSY store.

Hummingbirds

The weather here in Santa Fe is cooling down, especially in the evenings. I have so enjoyed the hummingbirds which frequent my yard in abundance. I have one that is particularly aggressive and dives after the others when they are near the feeders I have. You can hear this one coming because he makes a very distinct sound. It reminds me of the Jetsons space! I will miss them when it becomes too cold and they have to travel south. This spoon rest is an homage to my feathered friends.

A Mind of Peace

Here is a tile I made last winter. We have a beautiful Buddha statue in our hallway. I used the peaceful face of that statue as my inspiration. Today was a challenging day in the teaching world but I think I made a special connection with a young lady who is having difficulties fitting in. We talked about what inspires her and what she would like to do with her future. I got her to smile and open up a bit. We found out we have something in common! These moments are what makes the teaching profession so wonderful and rewarding. I hope you found something to inspire you today.

Marigold Peace Chains

These lovely strands of garland were made by some local artists who sell their lovely wares at the Santa Fe Farmer's Market. I always admire them when I pass by. If you look closely they have a handmade bead from Bolivia between each flower. I have thought about making these myself but I never seem to get to my marigold plants until the blooms are spent and gone to seed. The artists Bryan and Victoria Adams have wonderful rustic pieces that are handmade for your home and garden. It is so soothing to have beautiful things around you. I love natural rustic pieces and may have to purchase one of these Marigold Peace Chains sometime in the future.

Green Train

I really wanted to title this post Peace Train after that great Cat Stevens hit song. However it is more of a green train. Green in the sense that soon commuters and travelers between Santa Fe and Albuquerque will have a more green mode of transportation to take when traveling between cities called the Railrunner. It is exciting and a great feather in the cap of New Mexico. I am excited to take a ride someday and admire the sweeping views that I can't normally take in when driving myself.

Today was an exciting day in lovely Santa Fe! The new Railyard Park opened and residents welcomed the new commuter train called the Railrunner into the Railyard. There was lots of great energy in the air and people were very excited. This lively band pictured above provided music and smiles to people who were in attendance. I like the message that this drummer put on her drum.

This one of my first tiles that I made when I began this journey into the addicting world of working with clay! I'd like to think my work has evolved since then. Whether it has or not . . . . it is the journey that I am enjoying.

New Mexico Sunset Bowl

I made this bowl a while back (it's is listed in my ETSY store). I was inspired by the crystal clear blue skies here in New Mexico. I am constantly amazed by the gorgeous blue skies here. The sunsets here are spectacular. I make it a point to look out my window each night to see the colors of the sky at sun down. Take some time soon to enjoy the sunset. It's such a lovely time of day for reflection and finding your peace.

How I love coffee . . . I have since I was young. It's the one real addiction I have (besides pottery) and it doesn't show any signs of stopping. I also love big coffee mugs. I've been trying my hand at making coffee mugs. But they are HUGE as you can see in the picture above!! Good size for me but perhaps not good for those trying to cut back on caffeine. There is nothing like heading down the stairs and smelling that fresh brew and the taste of that first sip of coffee in the morning. True peace . . . .

Give Peace A Chance

Today was the final day of FIESTA! The annual Historical/Hysterical Parade was part of the days activities. These Santa Feans were walking and riding, carrying handmade signs and singing, "Give Peace A Chance." There were young and old side by side. Nice! I wonderful how I can become involved next year!

Viva Mariachi!

Mariachi Buenaventura is based out of Santa Fe, NM and has been together for about three years. This group of lovely young women has the distinction of being the only female mariachi group in Santa Fe. They have a large following here and once you hear them you will understand why. Mariachi Buenaventura will be touring in Europe during July 2008. They were invited to back up a choir from Cuahutemoc, Mexico at the World Choir Games held in Graz, Austria. I don't speak or understand a lot of Spanish but I sure enjoy listening to their music. They express so much joy in their music-making that I become mesmerized by their performance. The cry of "Viva la Fiesta" has been reverberating through the streets of Old Santa Fe every fall for almost 300 years. The exclamation generates a curious blend of being thankful, merry-making and pride in the hearts of Santa Fe residents who celebrate Fiesta each year to commemorate Don Diego De Vargas' peaceful reoccupation of the City of Holy Faith in 1692.

Old Man Gloom

Now you might think this post would be rather depressing given the title. However, it is quite the contrary. Each year at the beginning of the annual Santa Fe Fiesta celebration, thousands of residents write down their troubles, hardships, problems or concerns to burn up in this 50 foot puppet known as Zozobra. People are known to burn traffic tickets, divorce papers and a myriad of other documents in Zozobra. Over 40,000 people gather at Fort Marcy park to watch their troubles literally go up in flames. It is a comforting think of your worries going up in smoke. I hope your Thursday has been peace-filled and trouble free. Viva la Fiesta!!

I've made some birdhouses this past year out of clay. I love unusual, brightly colored birdhouses. They might not all be practical but they sure add color and fun to my garden!! Patron Saint of Mother Earth

This gorgeous bronze statue of Kateri Tekakwitha stands in front of Saint Francis Cathedral here in Santa Fe. She was the first Native American named a patron saint. I was captivated by the beauty of this statue the first time I saw it several years ago. Estella Loretto of the Jemez Pueblo was commissioned to create this statue in celebration of the cathedral's 150th anniversary in 2002. She stands in a prominent place near the main entrance to the cathedral as a testament to her dedication and service. I hope the beauty of this statue and the natural world around you inspire you to do something beautiful this week.

This great quilt was made by students at El Dorado Community School here in Santa Fe. I love the bright colors and the overall message . . . . just plain old peace. I just love these Volkswagon "Bug Buses!" There are several zooming around Santa Fe. Each one has a special personality and makes me smile. I've seen this particular one many times but haven't had my camera ready for a shot. Today when I stopped on the way home to pick up some refreshments, it was sitting still and my camera was on hand!

Terra Sigillata

This was a piece that was quick and easy to make. I stamped the texture into wet clay with an antique batik stamp and the tore the edges to give it a primitive, organic look. After the bisque firing it received a generous coat of terra sigillata which is a lustrous coating of wet clay that acts as a sealer. In this case it was to highlight the texture after I applied the beautiful golden glaze you see here. During the glaze firing, most of the terra sigillata burns away but sticks in the nooks to help the texture in the clay to stand out. I love this little piece and love the crackle in the glaze if you look closely.

I love every aspect about working with clay. The way it feels in your hands . . . the smell . . . watching it develop from a ball of mud into something you can use on a daily basis, a complement to your home decor or something lovely that speaks to you. One of my favorite things is to paint many different colors of underglazes (paint) on the clay and then gently sand to reveal the different layers. I tend to gravitate towards things with lots of character and layers that reveal a bit of their soul. It is my hope that my pottery speaks to the people who buy it or that receive it as a gift.

Comfort Food

There is nothing like a favorite dinner to comfort your hunger and your soul at the end of a busy day. This is one of my favorite soup recipes called Mexican Zucchini Soup or Calabacitas. Here is it in one of my over-sized bowls. One good thing about this recipe is that we can eat it for two days . . . . it's even better the second day!

Our Lady of Peace

This has been a big week of celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church here in Santa Fe. The parish had this statue commissioned by Mexican artist Georgina Farias to put in front of the church and brought in a caravan from Mexico. It was unveiled in a ceremony on Friday. It is a lovely bronze statue that looks out on the city of Santa Fe. The skies were a bit cloudy and rainy on Saturday when I took this pic. I'll go back soon to take more.

Plate of Plenty II

This is another dinner plate that I made. I love this stamp that I used around the rim. It is a sun motif stamp that I use a lot in my work. I love its primitive and organic nature. I love to use sun images in my work . . . . we get a lot of sunshine here in Santa Fe and also our fair share of wonderful fluffy clouds.

I have been making tableware for us. This is one of my dinner plates. It's BIG, measuring over 12 inches across! I like to use a textured stamp for decoration and then paint several layers of contrasting underglaze (paint) on the piece. Then I lightly sand to reveal different layers of paint. Tonight's pot roast tasted great on it!
There is great satisfaction creating something you can eat or drink out of. :)

Are your summer flowers blooming? I love the abundance of flowers here in Santa Fe. I am especially in love with the hollyhocks this summer . . . oh . . . and the sunflowers . . . . and the coneflowers . . . actually I love them all!! They always bring a smile to my face, joy to my soul and peace in my heart. I think I'll pick some and put them in this little dragonfly vase I made.
